Research has shown that when math content is new or difficult, students benefit from explicit instruction. Modeling with concrete materials and mathematical discourse helps to support conceptual connections. Participants will practice using the CRA model of teaching elementary mathematics. Using concrete materials, participants will learn how to develop conceptual understanding of operations with whole numbers, fractions and decimals, subitizing, counting, number recognition, and math vocabulary. Participants will use Math Language Routines with activities from elementary math standards to help students move from concrete to representational to abstract.
