Research has shown that when math content is new or difficult, students benefit from explicit instruction. Modeling with concrete materials and mathematical discourse help to support conceptual connections. Participants will practice using the CRA model of teaching in secondary mathematics. Using concrete materials, participants will learn how to develop conceptual understanding of operations with polynomials, functions, factoring, equations, and distributive property. Participants will use Math Language Routines with activities from secondary math standards to help students move from concrete to representational to abstract.
Presenter: Elsa Iglesias from Buncombe County Schools will be your presenter. Elsa is currently the EC Curriculum and Instructional Specialist for Buncombe County Schools, and currently provides PD for teachers in reading and math in her county.
