Teachers and school staff have some of the most difficult and challenging jobs in the professional world. Through these sessions, the participant will learn practices that promote personal and professional resilience to maximize their impact on student learning while also finding ways to promote their own self-care and motivation. During session one, teachers will examine personal goals, emotional management, barriers to healthy emotions, and strategies that refocus our commitment to the most important work they do.

The second session focuses on how to integrate social emotional skills into content through Positive Behavior Support, Multi-tiered systems of support, and curriculum resources. We will examine the role of equity for all learners as a major focus on targeted academic outcomes using social-emotional skill development in empathy, relationship skills, and demonstrated behavior. Participants will gain exposure to intentionally use relational and restorative practices to build, correct, and sustain desired behaviors in the classroom.

The last session will be focused on integration of social and emotional learning into school improvement planning at the school and district level. We will do a deep dive into systems level practices, identifying data sources, goal setting, and targeted outcome planning.

Presenter:  David Thompson

David Thompson is a retired educator with over 44 years of experience as a special education teacher, school psychologist, behavior specialist, and district administrator. He has been instrumental in utilizing existing and grant funding to fully integrate social and emotional learning into academic content through joint planning and implementation with curriculum, special education, Title I, ESL and other content areas. While this work is continuing, the impact on the school system is still creating momentum and motivation to further this work into district-wide discipline practices.
