The mission of this one-day conference is to provide professional development that focuses on globally enhancing K-12 teaching and learning. The conference strives to present K-12 teachers with examples of effective instructional strategies to foster global citizens, encourage collaborations among educators, promote global awareness, and enhance global awareness and interaction through technology.

 

WRESA STEM Tech Conference

In our ever-changing world, K-12 teachers and school leaders need to be equipped with innovative strategies for using technology effectively. Join us for a day of learning about the most effective use of technology in education, particularly its role in supporting STEM initiatives. Our keynote presenter will be Dr. Eric Carbaugh, an Associate Professor, Department of Middle, Secondary, and Mathematics Education at James Madison University.  He is the co-author of The Differentiated Flipped Classroom: A Practical Guide to Digital Learning. Dr. Carbaugh is an effective and seasoned member of ASCD’s Differentiated Instruction Cadre and Understanding by Design Cadre. You will also have the opportunity to select from multiple breakout sessions focused on elementary, secondary, and community engagement related to STEM and technology. ACT Test Preparation Course

Date:      Ongoing

Cost:      $85.00

The ACT Test Prep Course takes a comprehensive look at the five sections of the ACT giving the student guided instruction and practice on all aspects of the test. It includes test-taking strategies, practice assessments with diagnostic data, video learning tools, review problems and a certificate of completion. Students will have email access to the instructors. The course is designed to be completed in a short amount of time in preparation for an upcoming ACT.

Western Carolina University is the recipient of a grant from the North Carolina General Assembly that will help prepare educators to become school principals and, in turn, strengthen the quality of educational leadership in public schools.

Upper Elementary Number Sense & Computation, Including Fractions & Decimals

The world of STEM provides a rich environment that motivates children to want to learn more. Children often prefer reading about spiders and dinosaurs to fictional characters. STEM activities help students build vocabulary, incorporate problem-solving skills, and analyze complex text with real-world applications. Maximize classroom time by integrating literacy with the natural connections of STEM disciplines. The day will be a combination of STEM learning experiences infused with literacy strategies.  The part one session will concentrate on the understanding STEM, motion, observation versus inference, and biotic/abiotic factors.

This course will incorporate several literacy strategies for using informational text to increase reading proficiency. that all 6-12 grade teachers can use to get every kid thinking.You will be implementing the strategies that are discussed in the book. The course will be based on Kyleene Beers and Robert Probst’s book Reading Nonfiction: Notice and Note stances, Signposts and Strategies. You will be required to purchase the book before the class begins. This could fulfill the literacy requirement. This course will start March 20th and end May 1st. It is worth 2 CEUs. Learn how Buncombe County Schools use trauma sensitive strategies and social-emotional learning throughout their implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.   Using many tools and strategies from Compassionate Schools and the Community Resiliency Model, our trauma-sensitive schools deliver services to all students in a whole group, small group or individual model. You will receive practical strategies to be used immediately in the classroom based on brain research, along with guidelines to implement comprehensive programs of support for all students. You will also examine the benefits of integrating school-based mental health services into the tiered intervention model to achieve improved behavior outcomes. This workshop would be appropriate for Administrators, PBIS teams, MTSS teams, social workers, counselors, or any other school personnel involved in these issues. This hands-on session will expose participants to an array of technology tools, mostly free, that foster literacy across all content areas.  We will explore technology integration and flipped classrooms, to strengthen literacy skills with our struggling readers and writers. Participants will practice a wide range of tools to increase student engagement. This course could fulfill your literacy credit in 6-12 areas. Participants will leave with a digital web tool bibliography, shared through a common link.  This course is limited to 20 participants and everyone needs to bring their laptop or tablet.
