MTSS: Overview and Best Practices for High School

Dates: Sept 10, 24, Oct 8, and  Oct 22, 2021

Times: 9:00 – 3:00

Location: WCU Biltmore Park and Virtual Option ( WCU at Biltmore Park currently requires mask wearing throughout the entire facility)

This series of four full-day sessions is intended for school leadership teams to take a deep dive into the framework that supports all the work within the school. Day 1: Overview and review of FAM-S data; Day 2: Attendance and Academic Protocols; Day 3: Behavior and Social Emotional Learning Protocols; and, Day 4: Problems of Practice.

Requirements: Attendance of administrator each session (principal recommended); completed FAM-S (assistance provided if needed) and NCStar results; and fully charged laptops each session. Recommended number of participants per school are 4-8. Tamara Houchard, the Gaston County District MTSS will be leading these workshops. Please register each team member separately and include the Team Name (School Name is Fine).

Definitions 

MTSS:  Multi-Tiered System of Supports

FAM-S:  Facilitated Assessment of MTSS – School level
School Leadership Team:  Selected by the principal as members who have a broad view of various aspects of the school and who will move the work forward.

Certificate of Completion At the conclusion of the series, all participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for 15 hours of professional learning to submit to their districts for CEUs. It is up to each LEA to determine if CEUs will be awarded for participation in these sessions.

Planning Math Instruction for Acceleration

Focusing on acceleration to grade-level learning is critical while planning for math instruction. How do we focus on students’ needs and plan lessons that provide access to grade-level concepts? Join this program to learn best practices for re-engaging students in prior learning for success with grade-level concepts. This one-day program will explain the guidance from NCTM among others and demonstrate a planning protocol that will empower teachers to design acceleration lessons with confidence. This program is intended for math teachers and instructional coaches in grades 3-8.  Bonnie Bolado from NCCAT will be leading this workshop. All new activities and strategies for 2021!! Come join us for a fun day of K-12 activities that will help you teach cross-curricular concepts for true integration of movement, literacy, and social emotional learning. This will be an interactive and dynamic experience that provides participants with actual games, activities and teaching strategies they can implement immediately into their physical education curriculum. Participants in this workshop will learn dozens and dozens of hands-on games and activities for teaching fitness, and integrating literacy, all through team building challenges. This workshop will encompass new and exciting ways to incorporate new expectations where students are encouraged to think, move, read, write, and speak in every class every day. This session could allow participants to earn 0.5 CEUs in either content for PE or literacy category. The instructor will be Natalie Boone from Mars Hill University.
