Understanding the Science of Reading for Secondary teachers – The Big Picture

Audience: Middle and high school teachers, instructional coaches, interventionists, administrators, curriculum specialists
What to Bring: Charged Device

What are all those elementary teachers talking about? Participants will gain foundational knowledge on the research behind the science of reading. Topics will include brain research, dyslexia, Scarborough’s Rope, the 4 Part Processor and Spear- Swerling’s reading profiles. Participants will use the reading profiles to problem solve struggling readers’ access to content. Instruction will include embedding word origin, morphology, vocabulary and syllabication in order to differentiate.

Presenters: Elsa Iglesias and Liz Massey from Buncombe County Schools will be your presenters. Elsa is currently the EC Curriculum and Instructional Specialist for Buncombe County Schools, and currently provides PD for teachers in reading and math in her county. Liz Massey is the Multi Tiered System of Support (MTSS) Coordinator of Buncombe County Schools and a Literacy Specialist trained in the Science of Reading.
