Description:
What kinds of tasks do we give to students to develop a concept and how do we evaluate
students understanding of that concept? What role does formative assessment play in where
we go next? In this session, participants will explore the components of rigor, categorize tasks
by these components and review formative assessment to answer the “Now what?” question.
Presenters:
Meg McKee is currently an elementary math instructional coach with Buncombe County
Schools. She was a classroom teacher for 13 years in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades and has been
working in the curriculum department for 17 years. She began specializing in mathematics
about 12 years ago and in that time has had multiple opportunities to work with state math
leaders on various grants and projects. The latest grant project she worked with was the NC
Tools 4 Teachers website and resources. Meg loves to inspire teachers and students to find
their mathematical voices and celebrate the beauty of mathematics!
Kristine Schmitt is currently an elementary math instructional coach with Buncombe County
Schools. She was a classroom teacher for 15 years in 3rd grade and has been working in the
curriculum department for 8 years. She pursued and achieved her K-6 Math Add-On Licensure
through UNC-Charlotte. The latest grant project she worked with was the NC2ML, focusing on
creating the Instructional Frameworks that became a part of the Tools 4 Teachers website.
Kristine enjoys working with coaches, teachers, and students to find the joy in mathematics!
