This course examines the influence of smartphone usage on young people growing up in a society that is dependent on digital devices. After each section, which will consist of reading 1-2 chapters in the book, you will write a summary about specific topics in that section. This is a self-paced course. The following videos are intended to demonstrate the use of GLAD strategies with students. Each video will start with key points of preparation and background information, including page numbers in the Learning Guide. Throughout the video, “coaching points” will appear on screen to guide the practitioner about what to look for or notice. All video demonstrations were done with NC public school students working with a WRESA Project GLAD Agency Trainer. These videos are intended for teachers/practitioners who have already completed the Project GLAD Foundational Training, and have the Project GLAD Learning Guide in their possession.

Have you often wondered how to help students in your classroom who can’t seem to access your content? For students with poor reading skills, trying to keep up often feels overwhelming. Research shows that the teacher can make a difference at the secondary level to increase learning. Using secondary Math and Science standards, participants will practice embedding word recognition, vocabulary and comprehension strategies into their lessons in order to support their struggling readers.
Presenter(s): Elsa Iglesias and Liz Massey from Buncombe County Schools will be your presenters. Elsa is currently the EC Curriculum and Instructional Specialist for Buncombe County Schools, and currently provides PD for teachers in reading and math in her county. Liz Massey is the Multi Tiered System of Support (MTSS) Coordinator of Buncombe County Schools and a Literacy Specialist trained in the Science of Reading.
