Description: Foundations of Mathematics is a high-quality professional learning course based on the most
current research. It provides educators and administrators with the foundational knowledge
needed to support students with persistent challenges in mathematics, including dyscalculia. This
rigorous course utilizes evidence-based strategies along with a comprehensive assessment system
to guide instructional planning and delivery. Topics include Numeration, Quantity and
Magnitude, Equality, Base Ten, Form of a Number, Proportional Reasoning, and Geometric and
Algebraic Thinking. Specific strategies using explicit, multi-sensory, systematic instruction are
modeled and delivered using student work samples and error analysis through active
participation. This course can be taken in lieu of the Praxis for out of state licensure
candidates for NC teaching license.

Using secondary Math and Science standards, participants will practice embedding word recognition, vocabulary and comprehension strategies into their lessons in order to support their struggling readers.

Presenter(s): Elsa Iglesias and Liz Massey from Buncombe County Schools will be your presenters. Elsa is currently the EC Curriculum and Instructional Specialist for Buncombe County Schools, and currently provides PD for teachers in reading and math in her county. we respond to provide the best educational experience to help our
children lean and heal? This one-day interactive workshop will give you
an overview of trauma and the effects it can have on our students. We
will explore adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the research
behind it, toxic stress and how our stress response system works, and
trauma’s impact on the brain. We will then go into resilience-building
strategies for schools and programs to consider as they work with
students.
